Developmental Disabilities

Developmental disabilities have a variety of causes, which can occur before, during or after birth.   A developmental disability is a chronic mental or physical impairment or combination of these impairments manifested before the age of twenty-two. These conditions will likely continue indefinitely and result in three or more of the following substantial functional limitations: self care, receptive and expressive language, learning, mobility, self-direction, capacity for independent living, and/or economic self-sufficiency.

Persons with developmental disabilities can enjoy a full and active life.  Total focus should not be on limitations, but as with all people, to continue to discover the unique abilities within them.  What they need most is encouragement, understanding and the willingness of others to help them maximize their opportunities for becoming part of their community.

Eligibility for public mental health services is based on various factors including a diagnosis of a developmental disability.
