The Michigan Department of Community Health, through the Michigan Association of Community Mental Health Boards, has provided funding for this initiative through Federal Community Mental Health Block Grant funds. Overview of Change Agent Training: It is an expectation that individuals with co-occurring disorders have multiple issues that characterize complexity – not only co-occurring mental health and substance use, but also developmental disability, medical, legal, housing, trauma, domestic violence, educational and other social issues. Both the mental health system and the substance abuse system are traditionally designed to operate isolated from one another, with structures, funding, rules and regulations, clinician training and clinical practices that were not designed for the degree of complexity individuals and families present every day. Most simply stated, the vision is to create a welcoming, person-centered, recovery oriented, culturally competent, trauma informed, co-occurring capable system that is created through stakeholder partnership reflecting the spirit and capacity of our shared values to serve consumers of the public mental health and substance abuse system. The vision holds the promise of creating, over time, creative, dynamic, enduring and interrelated systems that: o Welcome individuals with complex needs into hopeful, caring and integrated relationships; o Support recovery through empowered partnerships focused on individualized goals; o Organize all staff to deliver effectively matched services in every setting to help individuals with complex needs achieve their recovery goals. Course Objective: The Comprehensive, Continuous, Integrated Systems of Care (CCISC) model is a multi-level systems change model that has implications for systems, programs, clinical practice and staff competency. The goal is to use the CCISC model at each PIHP and CA to build partnerships at all levels to create a transformation process in which every program engages in a quality improvement process and become a co-occurring capable program and all staff move toward core co-occurring competency. The success of this initiative depends upon the participation of leadership and empowered Change Agents to create changes at each level of the system. Purpose of the Training: To coordinate this at the local and state level, MDCH and ODCP are promoting a Change Agent Training. This training is based on a Michigan specific curriculum developed by Dr. Minkoff and Dr. Cline. These one-day trainings were already started in January, 2008 and will be offered twice every other month in two locations through September, 2008. Effective Change Agents are positioned within a system to link the system leadership with front line workers and consumers to advocate for policy that supports good clinical practice and to assist in the implementation of policy at the practice level. Central to that effort is the identification of barriers to good practice whether they are at the system, program, practice or competency level. It is recognized that across our state, many PIHPs/CMHSPs/CAs are already engaged in these processes. This is an opportunity to coordinate these local efforts to maximize resources, identify common barriers, and engage the entire state as a representative group able to address broad system issues. Target Participants: Current or interested Change Agent Team members for the Mental Health/Substance Use Disorder Integrated Treatment Initiative Projects in each community. MDCH will support a team of 10 to 30 Change Agents from each of the PIHP/CA regions in this effort. • Consumers • Substance Use Disorder program administrators and/or other staff • Mental Health program administrators and/or other staff • CA/CMHSP/PIHP staff • Other members as identified by the Project Team Participants Who Attend This Training Will Be Able To: 1. Identify key elements and roles of Change Agents. 2. Focus Continuous Quality Improvement of the system through the local Change Agent process. 3. Identify, screen and assess individuals with co-occurring disorders in a meaningful way. 4. Function as a systems Change Agent, help your agency, and the system as a whole and identify systemic barriers to the provision of welcoming, accessible, integrated, continuous and comprehensive services to individuals with co-occurring disorders and develop strategies to overcome these barriers. 5. Develop systemic structural and process changes to more effectively support the work of front line clinicians and staff in providing best practice integrated interventions to their clients. The Michigan Department of Community Health, through the Michigan Association of Community Mental Health Boards, has provided funding for this initiative through Federal Community Mental Health Block Grant funds. Course Description: As a follow up to the many times we have brought Scott Miller to Michigan, this is a skill building workshop designed to bring theory to practice. First, participants will learn the importance, effectiveness, and “how to” of using real-time feedback to determine the client’s perception of the therapeutic relationship and effectiveness of service; both variables associated with client retention and successful treatment outcomes. Then, working within the CDOI approach, the workshop will consider how to find and utilize the client’s “theory of change”, as opposed to any particular therapeutic model, to capitalize on whatever intrinsic motivation the client brings to the process. Course Objectives: Participants who complete this course will be able: • Examine research findings that indicate the therapeutic relationship is more predictive of success than the treatment model of the clinician • Consider simple real-time methods for acquiring and utilizing client feedback • Examine case scenarios to learn how to discover a client’s “theory of change” Who Should Attend?
